Self-Care Practices to Elevate Your Everyday

Self-care is not optional

Self-Care Is Stewardship, Not Selfishness

A lot of us see self-care as optional, something to do only after everything else is done. The truth is, self-care is not a luxury. It is something we all need.

If we ignore our physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual needs, it affects every part of our lives. We can end up tired, overwhelmed, and disconnected from what God wants us to do. Pastor Steven Furtick once said, if the Devil cannot distract you, then he will discourage you. That message made me think about times I felt discouraged and open to spiritual struggles, which often happened when I was physically worn out. So when we feel too busy for self-care, that is usually when we need it the most.

Self-care is not about being perfect, spending a lot of money, or avoiding your responsibilities. It means finding healthy, lasting ways to take care of yourself so you can be present in your life, your relationships, and your purpose.

Scripture Reflection

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 reminds us: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Taking care of yourself is part of honoring what God has entrusted to you.

Even Jesus modeled the importance of rest, prayer, solitude, and stepping away to be restored. Throughout scripture, we see moments where Jesus withdrew from crowds to pray, rest, and reconnect spiritually. If Jesus needed moments of restoration, we do too.

Common Hindrances to Self-Care

  • Feeling guilty for resting

  • Believing productivity determines worth

  • Overcommitting and lacking boundaries

  • Waiting for “free time” that never comes

  • Ignoring emotional exhaustion or burnout

  • Pouring into others while neglecting yourself

  • Believing self-care must be complicated or expensive

Faith-Based Solutions

1. Create Small, Sustainable Habits

Self-care does not have to be overwhelming. Small, consistent habits often create the greatest impact over time.

Scripture

Galatians 6:9“Let us not become weary in doing good…”

Consistency matters, even when it comes to caring for yourself.

2. Prioritize Rest Without Guilt

Rest is not laziness—it is renewal.

Scripture

Matthew 11:28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

God never intended for us to live in constant depletion.

3. Protect Your Peace Through Boundaries

Boundaries help preserve emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Scripture

Proverbs 4:23“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Protecting your energy and peace is part of healthy stewardship.

4. Stay Connected Spiritually While Caring for Yourself

True self-care includes spiritual care. Prayer, worship, scripture, stillness, and reflection help restore us from the inside out.

Scripture

Isaiah 40:31“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

Reflection Questions

  • Where in my life am I feeling emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually drained?

  • Have I been prioritizing productivity over peace?

  • What healthy boundaries do I need to create in this season?

  • What small self-care practices help me feel restored and grounded?

  • How can I honor both my responsibilities and my well-being?

Weekly Challenge

This week, intentionally choose one way to care for yourself each day.

It does not have to be something big or complicated. It may be:

  • Taking a walk

  • Drinking more water

  • Spending quiet time in prayer

  • Journaling

  • Going to bed earlier

  • Saying no to something draining

  • Taking a social media break

  • Spending time outdoors

  • Asking for help when needed

The goal is not perfection; it is consistency.

Remember: you cannot pour from an empty cup. Caring for yourself allows you to show up more fully for the life and purpose God has called you to.
