January Reflection: Looking Back with Gratitude, Looking Ahead with Purpose
A Sacred Beginning to the New Year
As a new year begins, there is often an unspoken pressure to move quickly—to plan, to decide, to become. But before we move forward, I want to invite you to a brief pause.
Not to set resolutions.
Not to chase clarity.
But to reflect, to give thanks, and to honor the journey that brought you here.
Here at Empowered to Live, we believe that faith meets purpose, and purpose fuels freedom. January is not about acceleration; it’s about alignment. Before we build anything new, we look back with gratitude and look ahead with intention.
This past year held conversations that stretched us, healed us, and reminded us that growth isn’t always loud, but it is always meaningful.
Week 1: Looking Back with Gratitude, Looking Ahead with Purpose
Anchor Scripture: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22–23)
Before we talk about purpose, we acknowledge God's unwavering faithfulness. God met us in clarity and confusion, in strength and survival. Growth was not linear, but presence was constant.
This year, we explored identity beyond performance, confronted the spiritual battles of the mind and heart, challenged the lies that kept us bound, released from burnout, and leaned deeply into gratitude not as a feeling but as a discipline.
Truths we learned together:
Healing is holy work
Rest is obedience, not weakness
Gratitude shifts perspective
Purpose unfolds one faithful step at a time
You are not behind, you are becoming
Reflection Prompt: Where did God stretch me this past year? What am I most grateful for as I close this chapter?

Week 2: Where Your Purpose Begins
Anchor Scripture: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you… before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
Purpose is one of the most searched-for ideas in our faith walk, yet we often approach it from the wrong starting point. We ask, “What should I be doing?” when God is gently asking, “Who are you becoming?”
Purpose did not begin with a career, ministry, or milestone; it started in God’s intention. When rooted in relationship, purpose becomes steady, freeing, and sustainable.
Common Hindrances
Tying purpose to productivity
Comparing your journey to others
Waiting for clarity before obedience
Feeling behind or unqualified
How to Move Forward
Purpose unfolds through presence before progress. Obedience, not perfection, opens the door to direction.
Journal Prompt: When did I first sense God stirring something meaningful in me?
Weekly Practice: Spend 10 minutes each day with God, no requests, no planning, just presence.
Week 3: Rooting Your Purpose in Who You Are
Anchor Scripture: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)
Purpose becomes fragile when it’s built on roles, titles, or approval. But when purpose is rooted in identity, it becomes resilient.
You are God’s workmanship, intentionally designed, thoughtfully formed. Your personality, passions, story, and even your scars are not accidents. When purpose is anchored in who you are in Christ, you can walk with confidence and assurance.
Common Hindrances
People-pleasing
Living from roles instead of identity
Fear of disappointing others
Trying to earn worth
How to Move Forward
Anchor your identity in Christ daily. Release labels that no longer align with the truth. Learn to say no without guilt.
Journal Prompt: What roles or labels have I allowed to define me that God may be inviting me to release?
Weekly Practice: Write five identity statements rooted in scripture and speak them over yourself each morning.

Week 4: Finding Purpose in Hearing God’s Voice
Anchor Scripture: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
Purpose is revealed through a relationship. God is always speaking, but noise, fear, and busyness can make us doubt His voice. Learning to listen builds trust in His ongoing guidance.
We often wait for dramatic confirmation, but God frequently speaks through quiet nudges and gentle invitations. Purpose unfolds step by step through obedience, not all at once through clarity.
Common Hindrances
Constant distraction
Fear of hearing wrong
Expecting God only in big moments
Doubting what you sense
How to Move Forward
Create intentional quiet. Learn God’s voice through scripture. Obey in small steps. Trust God’s patience with your growth.
Journal Prompt: When have I sensed God nudging me before—and how did I respond?
Weekly Practice: Set aside one quiet moment each day, even five minutes, to listen before speaking.
Closing Reflection
As we move through this new year, remember this:
You don’t have to rush.
You don’t have to reinvent yourself.
You don’t have to carry what God is asking you to release.
The same God who walked with you last year is already present in the next one.
You are still called.
You are still chosen.
You are still becoming.
