Building a Stronger Sense of Purpose

ree

Have you ever found yourself asking, “Am I really living out my purpose?” Maybe you’re moving through life on autopilot, weighed down by routines, responsibilities, or even past failures. The truth is, discovering your God-given purpose isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing journey of realignment, growth, and faith.

In this four-part series, Building a Stronger Sense of Purpose, we’ll walk through what it looks like to reset your direction, rise after setbacks, lean into community, and find meaning in the ordinary. I hope that you’ll be encouraged to see purpose not as something far away, but as something God is shaping in you right now.

Week 1: Reset Your Life’s Direction

Life has a way of pulling us off course. Without realizing it, we start living for expectations, achievements, or just survival. But every so often, God calls us to pause and reset.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”  Isaiah 43:19

A reset isn’t failure, it’s a fresh start. It’s permission to let go of what no longer serves you and lean into what God is birthing in this season.

Journaling Prompts:

  • Think about one area of your life that feels out of alignment right now. Write about what it would look like to bring that area back into step with God’s direction.

  • Describe one small step you can take this week toward a reset. How would taking that step change the way you feel about your future?

Week 2: Starting Over After a Setback: How to Reset and Come Back Stronger

We’ve all faced setbacks: the job that didn’t work out, the relationship that broke, the opportunity that slipped away. In that moment, they feel a crushing weight. But in God’s hands, setbacks are never the end; they’re often the setup for something greater.

Joseph’s story reminds us of this truth. Betrayed, imprisoned, and forgotten, Joseph could have given up. Instead, God used every disappointment to position him for influence. “What you meant for evil, God used for good” (Genesis 50:20).

Journaling Prompts:

  • Write about a setback you’re still carrying. How did it affect the way you see yourself, God, or your future?

  • Looking back, can you see any ways that God might be using that setback to prepare you for something greater? Write about the lessons or strengths you’ve gained.

Week 3: The Power of Community: Why It Matters on the Journey

Purpose is not meant to be lived out alone. We are created for connection, encouragement, and accountability.

“Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

The right community will pray for you, challenge you, and call out the greatness in you. Isolation makes us vulnerable, but community keeps us strong.

Journaling Prompts:

  • Reflect on the people in your life who encourage you and make you stronger. Write about how their presence has shaped your journey.

  • Think about one area of your life where you need more support. How could you take intentional steps to build or strengthen a community in that area?

Week 4: The Ministry of the Mundane: Finding Purpose in Everyday Life

We often think that purpose is something big, a calling, a platform, or a title. But God cares deeply about how we live the everyday moments of our lives.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” Colossians 3:23

Folding laundry, showing up to work, cooking dinner, or checking in on a friend, all of these become sacred when we do them with God in mind. Purpose isn’t just found in the mountaintop moments; it’s lived out in ordinary faithfulness.

Remember: The ordinary often sets the stage for the extraordinary. David was tending sheep when God called him.

Journaling Prompts:

  • Think about your daily responsibilities. How might you reframe them so they feel purposeful and connected to God rather than just routine?

  • Write about one “ordinary” moment where you’ve felt God’s presence before. How might you open yourself up to notice Him in those small moments more often?

Final Encouragement

Your purpose isn’t waiting for you somewhere far off in the distance. It’s here in the reset, in the setback, in the people you walk with, and in the small, faithful acts of daily life. As you move through these four areas, remember: you’re not building your purpose alone. God is shaping it in you every step of the way.
