A Safe Place in Difficult Seasons
Where do I go when life doesn't feel safe or predictable?
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." (Psalm 18:2)
Sometimes, life feels steady.
Things make sense. Plans work out. You have a sense of what tomorrow might bring.
Other times, it feels like everything is changing all at once.
Plans change.
People change.
Our bodies change.
Relationships shift.
Unexpected news comes.
Something we thought was certain suddenly changes.
Sometimes, before we can adjust to one change, something else happens.
During times like this, we might quietly ask ourselves:
Where can I turn when life doesn't feel safe or predictable?
That question has been on my mind lately.
There have been times in my life when I could see what was ahead and get ready for it. Other times, life changed before I could catch up.
I've learned that sometimes what we need most isn't another plan.
Sometimes, we just need a safe place.
Not necessarily a physical place.
But a place. It can be somewhere we don't have to pretend we're okay. Where we can admit we're tired.
Confused.
Disappointed.
Afraid.
Grieving.
Or just unsure about what comes next.
Psalm 18 reminds us that God gives us exactly that kind of place.

When Life Doesn't Feel Steady
David uses several descriptions of God in Psalm 18:2:
My rock.
My fortress.
My deliverer.
My refuge.
My shield.
My stronghold.
These words carry real weight.
They offer a sense of security.
David understood what it meant to face uncertainty. Even when he couldn't control what was happening, he found Someone he could trust.
That has something important to teach us too.
We often ask God to make our lives feel safer.
Fix this.
Change that.
Remove this problem.
Tell me what will happen.
And there's nothing wrong with asking God to intervene.
But sometimes God doesn't change things right away.
Instead, He might invite us to do something else:
Come closer.
The storm may still be happening.
The answer may not have arrived.
Tomorrow may still be uncertain.
But we can learn that feeling safe doesn't always come from knowing what will happen next.
Sometimes, real safety comes from knowing who is with us through it all-trusting God's presence can fill us with hope and a sense of stability amidst chaos.
A Safe Place Doesn't Mean an Easy Place
I think we need to be careful about how we talk about God's protection.
Trusting God doesn't mean difficult things won't happen.
Faith doesn't guarantee that we won't experience disappointment, illness, grief, loss, rejection, or seasons we never would have chosen.
Psalm 18 doesn't tell us David never had trouble; it shows us where David went when trouble came, reminding us of God's constant refuge.
It tells us where David went when trouble came.
That's different.
God being our refuge doesn't mean we never experience the storm; it means His presence remains with us through every challenge we face.
It means the storm doesn't remove our access to Him.
We can come to Him with the questions.
We can come with the tears.
We can come when we're angry.
We can come when we're frightened.
We can even come when we don't know what to say.
We don't have to clean ourselves up emotionally before entering the refuge.
God is not intimidated by what we're feeling.
And that matters, because sometimes the hardest part of a difficult season isn't only what happened.
It's feeling as though we have nowhere safe to put what happened.

When We Try to Create Our Own Safety
When life gets unpredictable, most of us naturally look for something that helps us feel in control.
If you're like me, having a good plan can be really comforting.
Give me a list.
Give me a schedule.
Give me something I can organize.
Even better if there are boxes I can check off.
But sooner or later, life brings things we just can't organize or control.
There are circumstances we cannot control.
People whose decisions we cannot manage.
Questions we cannot answer.
Outcomes we cannot guarantee.
That's when we start to see the difference between control and real security.
Control says:
"I'll be okay when I can manage everything around me."
Faith says:
"I can trust God even when I cannot manage everything around me."
But that doesn't mean we just give up or stop trying.
We still make wise decisions.
We prepare.
We establish boundaries.
We seek help.
We do what is ours to do.
Instead, we let go of the things we were never meant to control in the first place.
Everyday Obstacles
Trying to Control the Outcome
When we feel uncertain, we might think that planning, researching, worrying, or trying to predict every problem will help us feel safe.
However, worrying does not guarantee things will turn out the way we hope.
Pretending We're Fine
Sometimes, we mistake faith for ignoring how we really feel.
We might say, "I'm trusting God," but still not admit that we feel scared, hurt, disappointed, or tired.
Faith is strong enough to help us be honest about our feelings.
Isolating Ourselves
When life gets hard, we might pull away from others.
We all need time alone sometimes, but staying isolated for too long can keep us apart from the people God wants to use to help us.
Looking Too Far Ahead
A problem we face today can quickly turn into a worry about what might go wrong tomorrow.
Soon, we start worrying about next month, too.
And before we know it, we're thinking about next year's problems as well.
Before long, we're carrying problems that haven't even happened.
God gives us grace for today.
Faith-Based Solutions
Return to Your Refuge
Before trying to solve everything, stop and remind yourself who God is.
Psalm 18:2 gives us language when our own words are difficult to find:
You are my rock.
You are my fortress.
You are my refuge.
Sometimes prayer begins simply by remembering.
Tell God What's Actually Happening
Not the polished version.
The real one.
God, I'm scared.
God, I'm tired.
God, I don't understand.
God, I thought this would turn out differently.
God, I need You.
Honesty isn't disrespectful to God.
It's a relationship.
Stay in Today
Ask yourself:
What grace do I need for today?
Not next month.
Not six months from now.
Today.
Sometimes peace comes when we stop trying to live tomorrow before it arrives.
Allow Safe People Into the Season
God is our ultimate refuge, but He also created us for community.
Sometimes His care arrives through a friend who listens.
A family member who sits beside us.
A pastor.
A counselor.
A support group.
Someone who prays when we don't have the words.
Receiving support isn't a failure of faith.
Sometimes it's one of the ways God provides shelter.
Becoming in Action
Create Your Refuge List
This week, set up a page in your journal or notes app with the title:
When Life Feels Unsteady
Split the page into three sections:
What I Know
Write down what you know is true about God, even when things feel uncertain.
What I Can Do
Think about what you can control today and write it here.
What I Need to Release
List the things you have tried to handle but cannot control.
Take a moment to pray about the things in that last section.
You might simply say:
"God, I cannot carry all of this. You are my refuge. Help me do what is mine to do and trust You with what isn't."
If life ever feels overwhelming and your faith feels distant, come back to this page.
Reflect & Journal
When life feels uncertain, where do I naturally turn for guidance?
What am I trying to control right now to help myself feel safe?
Can I be completely honest with God about how I feel?
Who has God placed in my life that I feel safe with?
What might it look like for me to take refuge in God during this season?
You Don't Have to Know What Happens Next
Not knowing what comes next can feel really uncomfortable.
We like answers.
Timelines.
Plans.
Certainty.
But sometimes, life just doesn't give us those things.
Maybe that's why Psalm 18 feels so comforting right now.
David doesn't say:
My certainty is my fortress.
He doesn't say:
My plan is my stronghold.
He says:
The Lord is.
When circumstances move, God remains.
When plans change, God remains.
When we don't understand, God remains.
When we're grieving, God remains.
When tomorrow feels uncertain, God remains.
And when we find ourselves in a season we never saw coming, we don't have to know how everything will work out before we can rest in the One who holds us.
Maybe today, you don't need another answer.
Maybe you just need a safe place to bring your questions.
You have a refuge.
Continue the Conversation
This month, we're starting a journey focused on Healing and Emotional Wholeness. We want to make space for the feelings and experiences that can be hard to talk about, even in our faith communities.
Next week, we'll move forward with:
Quietness for My Anxious Heart
Even when we feel safe, our minds can still be busy and unsettled.
We'll talk about how to find quiet with God, especially when everything inside us feels far from calm.
Until then, keep these things in mind:
You don't have to pretend.
You don't have to carry tomorrow today.
And you don't have to face an uncertain season alone.
God is still your rock.
God is still your refuge.
God is still your safe place.
